Summer Enrichment Performing Arts Program

Catskill Mountain Foundation and Hunter-Tannersville Central School District’s Summer Enrichment Program, in cooperation with Creating Rural Opportunities Partnership (CROP), provide performing arts programs for children within the Hunter-Tannersville Central School District during the month of July and during the school year. With funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the Samuel and Esther Doctorow Family Foundation and private donations, Catskill Mountain Foundation hosts four one-week residencies at Hunter Elementary School in July and presents children's afterschool programs twice each year.

In the summer program, residency teaching artists work with teachers and staff to provide performing arts classes and activities. Grouped generally by age and grade level, students learn circus skills, dance, acting, puppetry, creating emotion with movement, playing theatre games, putting on a circus, and using voice and movement to tell stories. These stories, performed by students and artists, are often based on folk tales and original stories. During the school year, students from Hunter-Tannersville Central Schools and other schools in the ONC BOCES District attend live puppet shows performed by professional puppeteers.

The Nutcracker

Catskill Mountain Foundation, with esteemed dancers and instructors Victoria Rinaldi and Margo Sappington, form an exciting partnership to give the Mountaintop the ultimate holiday gift: the opportunity to participate in a professionally staged version of The Nutcracker. The performances are held on Saturday and Sunday in mid-December at Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Orpheum Performing Arts Center in the Village of Tannersville.

It’s the participation of both local children and adults in Act I that makes this production of The Nutcracker stand out from the rest: being part of Mountaintop history, working with incredible dancers and choreographers, and creating a new holiday tradition. Each year, the production looks for party children, party parents (adults), toy soldiers, mice, and angels to be part of the magic of the holiday season.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

This unique production, conceived by former Metropolitan Opera ballerina Victoria Rinaldi, transports the audience to an enchanted wood to witness what hilarity unfolds, when fairies meddle with the love lives of mortals. New this year is an expanded partnership with Joffrey Ballet School New York and the acclaimed Aquila Theatre, New York. Dancers from the country’s most elite dance programs join with students of CMF’s Orpheum Dance Program and don gossamer fairy wings in this midsummer comedic ballet.

Performances

Puppet theater performances stretch the limits of imagination, thrusting audiences into a world of legends and wonder. The National Marionette Theater has performed on our stages, introducing children to classic fairy tales with their marionette productions of Pinocchio, Peter and the Wolf, and Sleeping Beauty.

Catskill Mountain Foundation has also featured a wide range of talented musicians and vocal artists whose concerts have delighted our family audiences. Highlights include performances by folk musician Tom Chapin, a rendition of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf by chamber music ensemble PROJECT Trio, and DuffleBag Theatre, one of the most acclaimed theater acts for children, who performed their wacky and exciting twist on Charles Dickens’s classic tale A Christmas Carol.
